EV Charger Maintenance and Charging Station Servicing

EV charger maintenance is what separates a charging asset from a liability. A broken charger does not simply stop earning — it turns away a driver who had already chosen your site, and on a public network that driver tells an app which tells everyone else. Uptime is the product.

Trivonix provides preventive and corrective maintenance for AC and DC charging assets, whether or not we installed them, structured around a simple objective: find faults before drivers do.

What actually fails on a charging station

Charger faults cluster into a short list of causes, and knowing that list is what makes a maintenance regime efficient rather than ritualistic.

  • Connectors and cables — mechanical wear, pin damage, locking mechanism failure and cable damage from being driven over. Comfortably the most common physical fault.
  • Communication dropouts — the charger is electrically healthy but has lost contact with the management platform, so it appears offline and refuses to authorise sessions.
  • Payment and authorisation failures — card readers, RFID modules and back-office integration issues that stop a working charger from starting a session.
  • Thermal derating and shutdown on DC units, from blocked filters, failed fans or ambient temperatures above the design assumption.
  • Protection device tripping — RCD or earth leakage trips, sometimes caused by a vehicle fault rather than the charger.
  • Water ingress and corrosion, usually traceable to a damaged seal or a door left unsecured after an earlier visit.

Preventive maintenance scope

A preventive visit is a structured inspection with a written record, not a look around. Our standard scope covers mechanical, electrical and functional checks.

Mechanical and physical inspection

Enclosure integrity, door seals and locks, cable and connector condition, connector pin inspection, holster and retractor operation, bollard and foundation condition, signage legibility, and filter and ventilation path cleaning on DC units.

Electrical testing

Earth continuity and earth loop impedance, insulation resistance where accessible, RCD trip time and trip current verification, torque checks on terminations, and inspection of the supply distribution board serving the chargers.

Functional and network testing

A full test session at rated power using a test load or vehicle, authorisation testing across every payment method offered, energy metering verification, communication and heartbeat confirmation with the management platform, and firmware version review.

Corrective maintenance and response

When a charger does fail, the cost of the failure is mostly the time it stays failed. Our corrective process is built around eliminating unnecessary site visits and making the necessary ones productive.

  • Remote diagnosis first — a significant proportion of reported faults are communication or software issues that clear with a remote reset.
  • Fault triage against error codes and session logs before dispatch, so the engineer arrives knowing the likely cause.
  • Common spares carried on the vehicle — connectors, cables, contactors, RFID modules and fuses — so the frequent faults are resolved on the first visit.
  • Escalation to the manufacturer for warranty items, with the evidence pack assembled by us rather than left to the client.
  • Root cause recorded, so a repeatedly failing unit is treated as a design or environment problem rather than an endless repair.

Reporting and uptime

If uptime is not measured consistently it will be reported optimistically. We report against a defined method: availability per charge point, per site and across the estate, with faults categorised by cause and mean time to repair tracked separately from mean time to respond.

That distinction matters. Responding within four hours and repairing within four days is a very different service from what a single blended figure suggests, and only the disaggregated numbers tell you whether the problem is your maintenance contract, your spares position or your hardware choice.

Maintaining assets we did not install

We take on existing charging estates regularly. The first visit is a condition survey rather than a routine service: we establish what is installed, what condition it is in, what documentation exists, and what is likely to fail next.

That survey occasionally produces uncomfortable findings — undersized protection, poor earthing, water ingress, or units well past economic repair. We report those plainly with a recommendation and a cost, because a maintenance contract that quietly papers over an installation defect helps nobody.

Frequently asked questions

How often should EV chargers be serviced?

A common baseline is a preventive visit every six to twelve months, with high-utilisation public DC units at the more frequent end and lightly used AC units at the less frequent end. Statutory electrical testing intervals apply regardless of utilisation, and heavily used sites benefit from more frequent connector inspection since that is where wear concentrates.

What causes most EV charging station faults?

Connector and cable damage leads the list — physical wear, damaged pins, and cables driven over or dropped repeatedly. Communication dropouts come second: the charger works but appears offline and will not authorise sessions. On DC units, thermal issues from blocked filters or failed fans are a frequent third.

Can charger faults be fixed without a site visit?

A meaningful proportion, yes. Communication failures, stuck sessions, authorisation errors and some software faults clear with a remote reset or configuration change. That is why remote diagnostics access is worth insisting on when specifying chargers — it converts a large share of callouts into a five-minute remote action.

Do you maintain chargers supplied by other companies?

Yes. We start with a condition survey to establish what is installed, its condition and what documentation exists, then propose a maintenance scope. Where we find installation or safety defects, we report them with a recommendation rather than absorbing them silently into a service contract.

What uptime should a charging network realistically achieve?

Well-maintained networks with remote diagnostics, sensible spares holding and a defined response commitment sustain high availability consistently. The variables that actually move the number are spares availability, whether faults can be triaged remotely, and how quickly an engineer with the right part reaches site — not the brand on the charger.
