Testing and Commissioning Services for Electrical and Energy Systems

Testing and commissioning services do two jobs. The obvious one is proving the installation is safe and functional before it is energised. The less obvious — and more valuable over the asset's life — is producing a measured record of how the system performed when it was new, which is the only credible reference for judging it later.

Pre-commissioning checks

Pre-commissioning happens with the system dead and is where most defects are found. Skipping or compressing this stage is how commissioning turns into fault-finding on a live system.

  • Visual and installation inspection against the issued-for-construction drawings, including labelling and identification.
  • Continuity and polarity verification across all circuits.
  • Insulation resistance testing, conductor to conductor and conductor to earth.
  • Earth continuity and earth electrode resistance measurement.
  • Termination torque verification and thermographic baseline where appropriate.
  • Protective device inspection, rating verification and mechanical operation checks.
  • Confirmation that the installation matches the design, with any deviation recorded and assessed rather than accepted silently.

Functional and system testing

Once the installation is proven safe, testing moves to whether the system behaves as designed under energised conditions.

Protection and switchgear

Relay setting verification against the coordination study, secondary injection testing of protection functions, trip circuit verification, interlock and interlocking scheme testing, and changeover scheme testing where standby supplies are present.

Solar plant commissioning

String open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current verification against expected values, string polarity confirmation, IV curve tracing to identify mismatched or underperforming strings, inverter parameter configuration and grid-support settings, and thermographic inspection of DC combiner boxes under load.

EV charging commissioning

Earth loop impedance and RCD testing at each charge point, full-power charging test against a load, authorisation and payment path testing across every method offered, energy metering verification, communication and heartbeat confirmation with the management platform, and load management behaviour verified under simulated simultaneous demand.

Performance demonstration

Where the contract specifies performance, it has to be demonstrated under conditions that make the measurement meaningful. A performance ratio measured under unstable irradiance, or a load test run on a mild day, proves very little.

We define the test conditions in advance — the irradiance stability, ambient range, load condition and measurement duration required — and run the test when conditions permit rather than when the programme would prefer. A test run under invalid conditions produces a number that will be disputed the first time performance is questioned.

The test pack and why it matters later

The commissioning documentation is an asset in its own right. Five years on, when output has drifted or a fault appears, the only way to distinguish gradual degradation from a specific defect is to compare against measured values from when the system was new.

  • Recorded measured values, not just pass/fail results — a string reading of a specific voltage is useful in year five; a tick is not.
  • Instrument identification with calibration certificate references, so the readings are traceable.
  • Test conditions recorded alongside results — irradiance, ambient temperature, load state.
  • Defects and their resolution documented, including anything accepted with a concession and why.
  • Protection settings as applied, so a later change is identifiable as a change.
  • As-built drawings reconciled with the test records, so the two describe the same installation.

Commissioning work built by others

We are frequently engaged to commission installations we did not build — for owners who want independent verification, or where the installing contractor lacks commissioning capability.

Independent commissioning changes the incentive structure in a way that generally benefits the owner: the party proving the installation is not the party who would have to pay to fix it. We report findings as we make them, so defects can be corrected within the programme rather than becoming a dispute at handover.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between pre-commissioning and commissioning?

Pre-commissioning is performed with the system de-energised: inspection, continuity, insulation resistance, earthing and protective device checks that confirm the installation is safe to energise. Commissioning follows energisation and verifies that the system functions and performs as designed. Most defects are found during pre-commissioning, which is why compressing it is a false economy.

What should a commissioning test pack contain?

Recorded measured values rather than pass/fail ticks, the test conditions those values were taken under, identification and calibration references for the instruments used, a defect register with resolutions, protection settings as applied, and as-built drawings reconciled against the tests. That package is the performance baseline for the asset's whole life.

Why is IV curve tracing used when commissioning a solar plant?

Because open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current alone can look acceptable while a string is still underperforming. An IV curve shows the shape of the string's behaviour across its operating range, revealing mismatch, shading effects, degraded cells, and high-resistance connections that simpler measurements miss entirely.

Can you commission a system installed by another contractor?

Yes, and there is an argument that independent commissioning is preferable: the party proving the installation is not the party who would bear the cost of any defect found. We report findings as they arise so they can be corrected within the programme, rather than accumulating into a handover dispute.

How long does commissioning take?

It depends on system size and complexity, but the more useful point is that commissioning needs its own allocated duration and resources in the programme. When it is treated as the last few days of construction, it gets compressed, tests get skipped, and defects surface after handover when they are far more expensive and contentious to resolve.
